FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 7, 2008
Eco-City Alexandria Action Plan Open House Scheduled for Monday, November 17
Help Build Alexandria’s Environmental Future
Are you passionate about protecting the environment, reducing pollution, or improving access to public transportation? If so, the City of Alexandria and the Environmental Policy Commission invites you to the Environmental Action Plan Open House on Monday, November 17, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St.
At the Open House, residents will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the draft Environmental Action Plan being developed to fulfill the vision of the Eco-City Environmental Charter. The Charter is part of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative, a strategic, collaborative environmental planning process developed by the City in partnership with Virginia Tech’s Department of Urban Affairs and Planning and the Environmental Policy Commission. The Eco-City Environmental Charter—the first of its kind in Northern Virginia—was adopted by City Council in June 2008.
The Environmental Action Plan will be used as a road map for City leaders, staff, and citizens to implement the Eco-City Environmental Charter. The Environmental Action Plan will establish specific policy objectives, identify programs and resources, set timelines, and develop measures of success to fulfill the vision of the Eco-City Environmental Charter.
The Open House is also an opportunity for the public to provide feedback on the City’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer (MS4) Stormwater Program Plan. Due to new state regulations, this permit requires the City to update the MS4 Program Plan. Both plans will be posted online at www.alexandriava.gov/Eco-City after the meeting.
Written comments on the draft Environmental Action Plan may be e-mailed to Eco-CityAlexandria@alexandriava.gov; comments about the MS4 Stormwater Program Plan may be e-mailed to MS4ProgramPlan@alexandriava.gov. Comments for both plans may also be submitted to Office of Environmental Quality, Alexandria City Hall, 301 King Street, Room 3000, Alexandria VA, 22314. The deadline for submitting comments on both plans is Friday, December 5.
Please RSVP to the event at Eco-CityAlexandria@alexandriava.gov or visit alexandriava.gov/Eco-City for more information.
