City of Alexandria Offers Assistance with Winter Heating Bills

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Human Services is currently accepting applications for the 2008-2009 Winter Fuel Assistance Program now through Friday, November 14. Financial assistance is available to eligible low-income households to help pay for the primary fuel used to heat the home. Benefits are based on household size, income and type of fuel. The income and resources of all household members must be verified by the Virginia Department of Social Services to determine eligibility and benefit level.

The Virginia Department of Social Services will calculate the eligibility and benefit level in December, and provide written notice of eligibility and benefit level by the end of the calendar year. In most cases, payments are made directly to the energy provider. Eligible households may also receive assistance with repair and replacement of inoperable heating equipment. Applications for assistance may be obtained at the Department of Human Services, 2525 Mt. Vernon Ave., Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. To request an application by mail, please contact Ward Pivec at 703.838.0971.
