[Archived] City of Alexandria Convenes Potomac Yard Planning Advisory Group

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 21, 2008

City Manager James K. Hartmann has selected 20 individuals to serve on an Advisory Group for the Potomac Yard Small Area Plan amendment process. More than 50 nominations were received in response to an open call for volunteers. The 20 people selected for membership on the Advisory Group represent a full range of perspectives from throughout the City.

The Advisory Group is tasked with creating a community vision for the Potomac Yard site with regard to land use, development characteristics and amenities. The land at Potomac Yard represents the largest potential redevelopment parcel in the City. Alexandria is updating its Potomac Yard Small Area Plan to look comprehensively at the impacts and opportunities associated with the future redevelopment of the retail center and the Metrorail station feasibility study.

Planning Commission Chair Eric Wagner will also serve as Chair of the Advisory Group. The Advisory Group members include representatives from surrounding neighborhoods, the business community, the Alexandria City Public Schools, and the Potomac Yard property owners. Members with expertise in areas such as affordable housing, transportation, and the environment were also selected for the Advisory Group. The full list of members is available at alexandriava.gov/potomacyardplan.

The first meeting of the Advisory Group will be held today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Sister Cities Conference Room 1101, City Hall, 301 King St. The meeting is open to the public. The Advisory Group will continue to meet regularly through the fall of 2009, and will host up to four community workshops.
