At approximately 10:52 p.m. Saturday September 28, 2008, Alexandria Fire and EMS units responded to a report of an odor of natural gas, at the intersection of South Picket and Edsall Road. The first arriving unit investigated the area and found a strong odor of natural gas coming from the street. It was determined the odor was coming from a leaking valve on a high pressure natural gas line.

Washington Gas estimated six hours to perform needed repairs. The pressure in the line had to be reduced before needed repairs were performed. South Picket Street was closed between the 400 and 600 blocks. Edsall Road was closed between the 5300 and 5600 block. Businesses were notified and are scheduled to open on time. No residences were affected by the leak.

Fire crews remained on the scene until repairs were completed. South Pickett and Edsall Road reopened and the needed repairs completed at 10:27 a.m. Sunday September 28, 2008.
