FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 24, 2008

The City of Alexandria Seeks Members for Potomac Yard Advisory Group

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Planning and Zoning is accepting nominations for membership on the Potomac Yard Advisory Group. The group will provide input on the amendment process of the Potomac Yard Small Area Plan. The City hopes to attract new stakeholders with a broad range of interests and perspectives, and to engage new voices in the community. The Department is seeking a diverse group of approximately 15 people who can commit to a planning process expected to last 12 to18 months. Members should plan to commit to 10 to 15 hours per month as participants of the Advisory Group.

The City is seeking members who are residents of adjoining neighborhoods; parents with school-aged children; area businesses; property owners; and individuals with environmental, housing, transit, open space and/or planning interests. The City is also seeking members who are diverse in age, race, and ethnic background. City Manager James K. Hartmann will appoint the 15 members from among the nominations to formally establish the Advisory Group.

The Advisory Group will work directly with City staff to learn about the property at Potomac Yard, explore alternatives for redevelopment, and serve in an advisory role for staff and the Planning Commission. The group is responsible for finding a balance among key issues and ideas that will be considered. All Advisory Group meetings will be open to the public, and comments and input are welcome.

Nomination forms can be obtained at City Hall, Planning and Zoning Department, Room 2100, or at www.alexandriava.gov/potomacyardplan. Nomination forms are due to the Department of Planning and Zoning no later that Tuesday, October 14 at 9:00 a.m. All nominees will be notified within that week regarding the final members to be appointed. The first meeting of the Advisory Group will be Tuesday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Sister Cities Conference Room 1101, Alexandria City Hall, 301 King St. All appointed members will be expected to attend.
