[Archived] City Holds Transportation Workshops August 16 and September 17

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  August 6, 2008

City of Alexandria to Hold Transportation Workshops August 16 and September 17
Free “How-to” Workshops to Help Residents Understand Transportation Options

The City of Alexandria is offering transportation workshops to help residents cope with energy costs by providing information and education on traveling efficiently by bicycle, ridesharing, and public transportation.

Residents may attend one of two workshops:

The workshops, a collaborative effort between the City, DASH (Alexandria Transit Company) and the Washington Area Transit Authority (WMATA), are designed for residents who regularly rely on a personal vehicle, but would prefer to use more economical and environmentally friendly modes of transportation.

Living a car-free, or “car-lite,” lifestyle is easy in Alexandria. The City is served by three bus lines, four Metrorail stations, the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) commuter train, Amtrak, High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, a comprehensive network of bikeways, and the King Street Trolley. Attendees will learn how to read bus and rail schedules and maps, understand fares, navigate the City and surrounding areas by bicycle, and find carpool and vanpool matches for utilizing HOV lanes. Additionally, participants will learn about support programs such as Guaranteed Ride Home and carshare.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the City's Human Rights Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
