Alexandria Commission for the Arts Seeks Nominations for 2008 Alex Awards

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking nominations for the 2008 Alex Awards. The program recognizes individuals, organizations, schools, and businesses that have made exceptional contributions to cultural life in the City of Alexandria. All nominations must be submitted to the Durant Center, 1605 Cameron St., by 4 p.m. on Friday, September 19.

The annual program, sponsored by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, promotes interest and involvement in the arts by recognizing excellence in four categories:

1. Artistic – Excellence in an Artistic Discipline
2. Community – Excellence in Service to the Arts
3. Education – Outstanding Contributions to Arts Education
4. Business – Innovative Partnerships between Businesses and the Arts

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts invites colleagues in these sectors to nominate individuals they believe helped to inspire and sustain a creative environment for the Alexandria community throughout this year.

Barbara Boehm, 2008 Alex Awards Chair, announced this year's theme as "Global Arts" to recognize and celebrate the influence of world cultures on art in Alexandria. The 2008 awards' program features dance, music and theater performances from Alexandria artists showcasing the City's rich diversity.

The 2008 Alex Awards will be presented at a citywide event scheduled for Friday, October 24, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St. Winners in each of the four categories will receive an original work of art commissioned from a local Alexandria artist. In addition, Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille will be honored for his many contributions to the Alexandria arts community.
