[Archived] Alexandria Features Junior Bicycle Ambassadors At July 12 Birthday Celebration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  July 11, 2008

City of Alexandria Features Junior Bicycle Ambassadors
At July 12 Birthday Celebration

Teens Promote Bicycling as Economically, Environmentally-Friendly Form of Transportation

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services will feature the Local Motion Junior Bicycle Ambassadors at Alexandria’s Annual Birthday Celebration this weekend. The celebration will be held on Saturday, July 12, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Oronoco Bay Park, 100 Madison St., located at the Potomac River between Fairfax, Pendleton, and Madison Streets. Bicycle Ambassadors will be available from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to educate residents about bicycle safety and distribute bicycle route information to the public.

The Local Motion Bicycle Ambassador program is comprised primarily of local students from George Washington and Hammond Middle Schools. They attend events throughout the year to inform residents about riding bicycles as an economically, environmentally-friendly form of transportation, encourage safe bicycling practices, and help bicyclists, motorists, and pedestrians better share roads and trails.

Local Motion Ambassadors made their first appearance at this year’s Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront Festival. Ambassadors also attend the Old Town, West End, and Del Ray Farmers Markets and various community events, to promote bicycling by passing out bicycle maps to cyclists and pedestrians.

The Local Motion Bicycle Ambassador program is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to increase awareness about the ease of bicycle travel throughout the City and surrounding areas. Throughout August, Local Motion will be launching a Transit Ambassadors program to increase the number of trips people make on public transportation into and around Alexandria.
