[Archived] Alexandria Installs Multi-Space Parking Meters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 27, 2008

City of Alexandria Installs Multi-Space Parking Meters
Parking Meters to Increase Customer Service and Convenience

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services will install state of the art multi-space parking meters in the East Eisenhower-Carlyle area throughout July. These meters will provide short-term parking to support ground floor retail space.

Multi-space parking meters serve several parking spaces in a centralized location.  New meters allow convenient payment options by coin or credit card.  Multi-space parking meters will increase reliability, lower maintenance costs, and reduce sidewalk clutter.

The city’s East Eisenhower-Carlyle sector plan recommended use of on-street parking meters to encourage parking turnover, which directly coincides with the City’s commitment to providing alternative forms of transportation and public transit.

Follow these four steps to multi-space parking meter use:

1. Insert coins (quarters or dollar coins) or credit card (Visa, Master Card, or Discover).
2. To add time, add more coins; if using a credit card, press the corresponding buttons.
3. Next, push the print button for a receipt.
4. Finally, place the receipt face-up on the dashboard of your car.

Effective July 1, all parking meter rates in the city will be $1.00 per hour, Monday through  Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
