Public Hearing on Eco-City Alexandria Environmental Charter
 Scheduled for Saturday, June 14

The City of Alexandria invites residents to attend a public hearing on Saturday, June 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in City Council Chambers, City Hall, 301 King St., to consider adoption of the first Eco-City Alexandria Environmental Charter in the region. The Eco-City Alexandria initiative began in the spring of 2007 when the City of Alexandria, the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, and the Environmental Policy Commission first partnered with Virginia Tech University’s Department of Urban Affairs and Planning. This collaborative partnership has guided Alexandria towards a more sustainable environmental future.

On Saturday, March 8, more than 120 participants took part in the Eco-City Café, where residents provided input and feedback to develop an Eco-City Environmental Charter. The City’s first Eco-City Summit was held on Saturday, May 10 at T.C. Williams High School. The Eco-City Summit was an open forum where nearly 200 residents and community stakeholders participated in roundtable discussions on the draft Environmental Charter. This document will serve as the foundation for the City’s guiding principles, vision, and overall environmental future. Public comments and feedback were incorporated into the draft Eco-City Charter, which was developed and approved by the Environmental Policy Commission (EPC) on May 19.

Following the June 14 public hearing, the City of Alexandria’s Environmental Policy Commission, Virginia Tech, and City staff will create a draft Environmental Action Plan, which will include concrete environmental actions the City will carry out over the next 10 to 20 years. Work to create an Environmental Action Plan will begin later this year.
