Alexandria to Host Rally for National HIV Testing Day
On Friday, June 27, Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille and the City of Alexandria’s Health Department will host a rally in recognition of National HIV Testing Day. The rally serves as part of the fourth annual “Mayors Campaign Against HIV,” coordinated by the National Association of People With AIDS. In May, Mayor Euille joined 58 other mayors across the country by signing up for the “Mayors Campaign Against HIV” to raise awareness of the need for HIV testing.
The rally will begin at 12 p.m. at Market Square in front of City Hall (301 King St.). Vice Mayor Redella S. “Del” Pepper will make remarks, followed by persons with HIV/AIDS, who will give their personal testimonies about living with the disease. T. C. Williams High School student Young Lyric, a rap artist and winner of the Citywide Spoken Word competition, will provide entertainment at the rally.
Whitman-Walker Clinic of Northern Virginia, K. I. Services, and staff from the Alexandria Health Department will be available to provide confidential HIV testing. Members of the Northern Virginia HIV Consortium’s Prevention and Education Committee will provide counseling, testing, information and other assistance at the event. Members of the committee include staff from Arlington and Fairfax County Health Departments, AIDS Response Effort, INOVA Juniper Program, Whitman-Walker Clinic of Northern Virginia, K. I. Services and the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM).
