Alexandria Police Strive to Prevent Underage Drinking
The Alexandria Police Department is increasing DWI enforcement and education efforts in order to promote a safe prom and graduation season. The Department is employing a variety of measures to ensure safe, alcohol-free driving throughout the City, as well as educating young people about potential dangers and consequences of underage alcohol consumption.
The number one killer of teenagers is drunk driving. Each year, more then 3,500 teens are killed and another 85,000 injured in alcohol-related car crashes. Officers have received additional training on handling underage drinking incidents and will be on the lookout for them. The Police Department maintains a “zero tolerance” when investigating these incidents.
On June 5, the Department participated in a Teen Driving Assembly, hosted by ABC 7/WJLA-TV, at T.C. Williams High School. The assembly educated students on the effects speed and alcohol have on their coordination and driving. Additionally, school resource officers are spreading a prominent anti-DWI message. A wrecked car from a DWI-related crash has also been placed in front of the school building.
Residents are encouraged to report underage drinking activity to the Police Department at 703.838.4444.
