FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 30, 2008

Public Invited to Attend Community Meeting on Proposed Base for John Van Alstine's Sacandaga Totem at Fayette Street Plaza

The public is invited to a community meeting to discuss the proposed base for the Sacandaga Totem sculpture at the Fayette Street Plaza, located at the intersection of King and Fayette Streets. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. on site at 1200A King St. The Sacandaga Totem was created by John Van Alstine and donated to the City by the Alexandria Sculpture Festival.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide an overview of the proposed sculpture base, lighting and minor site improvements, and for the public to provide input for the sculpture installation. Approval for the sculpture base and lighting is required by the Board of Architectural Review.

The presentation will be conducted by the project’s planning and landscape architectural consultant Stephenson and Good.  Stephenson and Good is a nationally recognized leader with comprehensive experience in the planning, design and implementation of landscape architectural and site development projects.

After a public comment period, the Alexandria Commission for Arts recommended that the City Council accept the Sacandage Toten. On January 22, 2008, City Council accepted the gift and agreed to place the Sacandaga Totem at the Fayette Street Plaza.
