May 19-24, 2008 marks the 35th Annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week, a national event bringing together local communities to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's "front line."

Mayor William D. Euille has signed a proclamation in recognition of National EMS Week. Inova Alexandria Hospital will host a breakfast to honor and thank local EMS providers on May 20 at 9:00 a.m. The breakfast will feature the presentation of the Gerald L. Fair Sr., Award, for outstanding contributions to emergency medical services in the City of Alexandria, and The City of Alexandria EMS Council’s The Call of The Quarter.

This year’s theme is "Your Life is Our Mission," a statement chosen to recognize the commitment that emergency medical personnel across the nation make to their mission to provide round-the-clock care to the communities they serve.

In 1974, President Gerald Ford signed the first official National Emergency Medical Services Week proclamation. Each year since then, National EMS Week has honored the contributions of EMS providers nationwide and has underscored the importance of strong public support for the EMS system.
