City of Alexandria Hosts Annual Bike to Work Day Celebration
On Friday, May 16

Hundreds of Commuters Expected at Market Square

The City of Alexandria annually recognizes national Bike to Work Day by celebrating and promoting bicycle commuting as an affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly way of getting to work. Thousands of area commuters will ride their bikes to work on Friday, May 16 to demonstrate that the region’s transportation network makes bicycling throughout the City a feasible and safe travel option.

More than 20 “pit stops” are available in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for commuter cyclists. The City of Alexandria’s pit stop will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Market Square (301 King St.). This year’s event at Market Square will feature a Metrobus for cyclists to practice loading and unloading their bikes, and cyclists will receive free food, beverages, and services provided by local businesses and sponsors.

Bike to Work Day is free and open to all commuters throughout the City of Alexandria. Registration is required and cyclists who register before May 9 will receive a free T-shirt at the Market Square pit stop and be entered into a regional bike raffle.

In Alexandria, participants also have a chance to win grand prizes as part of a raffle that will take place at 8 a.m. Grand prizes available include:

• Free weekend night stay at the new Hotel Monaco, courtesy of Hotel Monaco
