Alexandria Commission on Aging to Present Excellence in Aging Awards
 Event Will Include Presentation on the “Village Concept” 

The Alexandria Commission on Aging will present the 2008 Excellence in Aging Awards Thursday, May 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Goodwin House Alexandria, 4800 Fillmore St.  The event, which coincides with the national observance of Older Americans Month, is open to the public.

Each year, the Excellence in Aging Awards are given to individuals and organizations that have shown exemplary efforts in helping the City’s older residents maintain their independence and live their lives to the fullest. This year’s award winners are: Sandra Calhoun, who will receive the Annie B. Rose Lifetime Achievement Award; Amber Nightingale and Barbara Callahan, who will receive Lois Van Valkenburgh Excellence in Aging Awards for an Individual; and ALIVE!, which will receive the Excellence in Aging Award for an Organization. 

Guest speaker Gail Kohn, Executive Director of Capitol Hill Village, will discuss the Village Concept, a service strategy that originated in Boston that organizes communities and individuals to provide a wide array of services to enable community members to remain in their homes as they age. Come listen and learn whether this kind of grass roots community effort might work in your Alexandria neighborhood.
