[Archived] Nominations Sought for Governor's Awards for the Arts

Nominations of Alexandria Artists and Art Organizations Encouraged for the
“Governor’s Awards For The Arts”

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts encourages the public to nominate Alexandria artists and art organizations for the Governor’s Awards for the Arts 2008. The awards recognize outstanding lifetime achievement by Virginia artists, art organizations and individuals who support and encourage the arts. Governor Timothy M. Kaine will present the awards at a ceremony in September. The awards are administered by the Virginians for the Arts Foundation, which is chaired by Jeannie Baliles, former First Lady of Virginia.

“While the Governor’s Awards spotlight the creative spirit throughout the Commonwealth, they also provide an opportunity to demonstrate how the arts contribute to the quality of life in our individual communities,” said Cheryl Anne Colton, Cultural Arts Administrator with the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. “Our area is rich in the cultural arts, and I am honored to be asked to serve on this important program that recognizes their significance.”

Nominations for the Governor’s Awards for the Arts 2008 must be received by Thursday, May 15, 2008.  A blue ribbon panel of judges will select 10 award winners to be announced on August 1, followed by an awards ceremony to be held in September. For additional information on how to make a nomination, visit www.arts.virginia.gov.
