Tax Preparation Assistance Offered to Low-Income Residents
Residents Urged to Submit a Return to Receive Economic Stimulus Payment

Residents who are not legally obligated to file tax returns are still eligible to get an economic stimulus payment from the federal government this year, if they file a 2007 return. To help those individuals, free filing assistance will be provided at the Alexandria Department of Human Services (2525 Mt. Vernon Ave.) on Saturday, April 19 from 9 a.m. until noon. Trained volunteers from Community Tax Aid, Inc. will provide hands-on expert assistance to ensure that residents are eligible to receive the economic stimulus payment.

Anyone who received income of more than $3,000 from benefits and/or wages in 2007 from Social Security, SSI, SSDI, VA and/or Railroad Retirement may be eligible for the tax rebate payment. Persons who receive SSI only are not eligible for the payment.  According to the IRS, people filing only to receive the economic stimulus payment do not have to file by April 15 and they do not have to file a Form 4868 for an extension. However, they do need to file Form1040A by October 15 to receive the payment in 2008.

To receive tax preparation assistance, bring a picture I.D., Social Security cards for all dependents, ITIN letter(s) for all family member, W-2s and 1099s, end of year statements from other income sources (Social Security, bank interest, SSDI, SSI, RR,VA, etc). Doors will open one hour before service begins; first come, first served.

Individuals with disabilities who require reasonable accommodation to access these services may call 703.519.3318 ext. 206 (TTY/TDD 703.838.5056). Please allow 48 hours notice.
