Volunteers Needed to “Spring for Alexandria”
Event Combines Community Service, Fundraising--and Fun

Spring is finally in the air, and with it comes the opportunity to “spring” into action, volunteer your time, and make a difference for others in Alexandria. The community is invited to volunteer for the first annual Spring for Alexandria event on Friday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The goal of Spring for Alexandria is to gather hundreds of volunteers together to provide community service at dozens of sites throughout the City, making it a better place for everyone!

Volunteer help is needed at project sites throughout the City to complete a variety of tasks, ranging from landscaping, stream cleanup, painting, and technology projects such as Web design and graphics support for local nonprofit organizations. Volunteers can sign up individually, or recruit a team for a specific project. Project managers and leaders are also needed at project sites. Volunteers wishing to serve in those roles must attend a mandatory training session on one of two dates: April 15, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.; or April 17, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Lee Center, (1108 Jefferson St.) All interested individuals can register themselves and team members and request their service project choices at www.springforalexandria.org

Spring for Alexandria is not only a day of service, but also the largest fundraising event of the year for the Alexandria Volunteer Bureau. No registration fee is required for individuals to participate, but registered participants are encouraged to raise pledges to support the event. The top pledge raisers will receive great prizes, such as airline tickets, restaurant gift certificates, and many other great rewards! All volunteers will receive a Spring for Alexandria t-shirt and are invited to a community-wide celebration following the event at Market Square (301 King Street) from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Spring for Alexandria event is a collaborative effort of several Alexandria organizations, including the Alexandria Volunteer Bureau, the City of Alexandria, the Alexandria City Public Schools, the Alexandria Community Trust, Rebuilding Alexandria, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and Lemonaide. The honorary chair for this year’s event is Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille.
