Saturday, March 29 – Ninth Annual Dance for All Ages “Sock Hop”
The City invites the public to attend the ninth Annual Dance for All Ages on Saturday, March 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St. This year’s theme is a “Sock Hop,” featuring music of the 1950s and 1960s by disc jockey Steve McIntire. Admission and parking are free. Saturday, March 29 – Fourth Annual Rum Punch Challenge
Tavern guests enjoyed rum punch more than 200 years ago and you can, too, at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, 134 North Royal St. Sample different rum punch creations from local distilleries, restaurants and caterers and vote for your favorite! At the end of the evening, the winner will be announced. Both period and modern food will be served. This event is sold out, but media may cover this fun competition. Monday, March 31 – Tavern Toddlers
Because it is never too early for kids to appreciate history, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum developed this special program for toddlers (walkers through 36 months) and their caregivers. Tavern Toddlers features a weekly open playtime on the first Monday of the month at the museum, 134 North Royal St. In March, the focus is Going on a Trip, where children will go on adventures as they pretend to be travelers. Monday, March 31 – Annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet
The Alexandria Commission for Women invites the public to attend the 28th Annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet. Individual banquet tickets may be purchased online through the City’s eChecks system or by downloading the invitation and reservation card at www.alexwomen.com. The RSVP deadline is March 28. Tuesday, April 1 – King Street Trolley Begins Official Service
The public is invited to experience the King Street Trolley! The King Street Trolley is officially open for business and will run free of charge seven days per week from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Riders can board at the King Street Metro station or any of the flagged stops along King Street as it makes its way to and from the Old Town waterfront. The trolley is offered as part of the City's continuing efforts to manage congestion and reduce mobile emissions through encouraging use of travel options outside of driving. Tuesday, April 1 – iM2 Film Festival
The iM2--iMovie Mentors program is hosting their first annual film festival from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.at the Old Town Theater, 815½ King St. The iM2--iMovie Mentors program pairs boys from George Washington Middle School with adult male mentors, and they attend a weekly workshops together to establish a mentoring relationship and learn the fundamentals of filmmaking. Film festival attendees will see short features about Alexandria’s Mayor Euille, the Potomac Belle and the Alexandria Fire Department, and find out if there are ghosts that haunt the City. Thursday, April 3 – Eighteenth-Century Dance Lessons
In preparation for the Grand Ball on April 19, learn 18th-century English country dancing from expert dance instructors at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, 134 North Royal St. Lesson runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and cost $12 per class. Thursday, April 3 – Saturday, April 5 – Duncan Branch Library Book Sale

Spring Clean Up 2008 – Each Saturday in April (April 5, April 12, April 19, April 26)
Residents who receive refuse services from the City of Alexandria are invited to participate in Spring Clean Up 2008—an opportunity for residents to clean out unwanted items. Scheduled pickups will be held each consecutive Saturday throughout the month of April. Please check the Spring Clean Up Map at alexandriava.gov/tes to determine your assigned collection area, your date of collection, and to view guidelines on acceptable materials, or contact the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, Solid Waste Division at 703.519.3486.

Saturday, April 5 – 14th Annual Homeownership Fair
Come learn how the City can help you in purchasing your first home! Free seminars on the home buying process, financing your home purchase, and understanding your credit will be offered in both English and Spanish. The Fair will feature exhibitors from area lenders, real estate agencies and non-profit agencies, as well as lots of door prizes. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mount Vernon Ave. For more information, contact the Office of Housing at 703.746.4990.

Saturday, April 19 – Annual City-Wide Cheerleading Competition
The public is invited to attend the City’s Annual Cheerleading Competition, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19 at T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King St. The competition features preteen and teen cheerleading squads from the Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Mount Vernon, Nannie J. Now Being Accepted – History Award Nominations
The Alexandria Historical Society is calling for nominations for the 2008 Alexandria History Award, to be presented to a person or persons who have made noteworthy contributions to the preservation of the historic, cultural, and artistic heritage of Alexandria. Honorees will be presented with a certificate and gift at a special awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m., at The Lyceum, 201 S. Washington St. Organizations and interested individuals are invited to submit written nominations, in the form of a narrative no longer than two pages, which explain the contributions of the nominee.
