[Archived] Alexandria to Host 15th Annual Alexandria Earth Day

City of Alexandria to Host 15th Annual
Alexandria Earth Day on Saturday, April 26
Alexandria:  What’s YOUR Footprint?

The City of Alexandria will host the 15th Annual Alexandria Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration at Ben Brenman Park (4800 Brenman Park Dr.) on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s theme "What's YOUR footprint?” will focus on everyday activities residents can do to reduce their environmental footprint, and will educate residents about how they can make a difference, both locally and globally. This year, the Alexandria Earth Day Committee has committed to making this a zero-waste and carbon neutral event.

The event features City agencies and organizations dedicated to protecting public health and the environment. Exhibitors will provide educational activities that inform residents about how to modify their behavior to reduce their environmental footprints. Additional activities include recycling and composting demonstrations, live music, an Arbor Day tree planting, a performance by Blue Sky Puppets, and a “Green Home” Expo. For additional information visit www.alexearthday.org

Alexandria Earth Day is an official partner of “Spring for Alexandria,” a three-day celebration of giving and service in the City, scheduled for April 24-26. For volunteer opportunities during Alexandria Earth Day, visit springforalexandria.org.

On May 10, the City will host an Eco-City Summit to provide residents with a public forum to comment on environmental issues, and to draft an environmental action plan for the City. For more information about the Eco-City Summit, please contact the City’s Division of Environmental Quality at 703.838.4334, or visit alexandriava.gov/tes.

The City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities and Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, the Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the Alexandria Volunteer Bureau are sponsoring the Earth Day Celebration. In case of inclement weather, the event will be relocated to the Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School, 435 Ferdinand Day Dr. For additional information on Earth Day Activities, call the Special Events Hotline at 703.838.4686 or the Special Events Office at 703.838.4844.

The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. To request a reasonable accommodation or to request materials in an alternative format, call Maureen Sturgill at 703.838.4844 (TTY 703.838.4902) or e-mail Maureen.sturgill@alexandriava.gov.
