Sheriff Lawhorne Serves As Region 1 Director for 2008 Special Olympics 

City of Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne has announced that he will once again serve as the Region 1 Director for the 2008 Special Olympics Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run on Thursday, June 5. Region 1 represents law enforcement agencies in the Cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park and the Counties of Arlington, Culpeper, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William. Other participating governmental organizations include federal law enforcement agencies with offices in the Metropolitan Washington area and the military police detachments at Fort Myer, Fort Belvoir, and Quantico.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grass roots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics Virginia. Through the annual 2,000-mile run, over 3,000 Virginia law enforcement officers will carry the Flame of Hope across the state to open the Summer Games in Richmond on June 6-7, 2008. The Torch Run, and other fund-raising events held throughout the year, raises hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for Special Olympics Virginia.

The opening ceremonies for the 2008 Special Olympics Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run will be held at the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Arlington, Virginia on Thursday, June 5, at 9 a.m. The ceremonies are open to the public and media representatives are encouraged to attend.

While by definition, it is a sports program, it is also an event that facilitates social change. It is about adjusting negative attitudes and misperceptions and creating positive public attitudes towards a growing population of people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Virginia is 100% about our community. It begins with our athletes, but its potential extends to all of us, and to the tone and the soul of our community.”
