City of Alexandria Cosponsors Fundraising Events for
Planned Soft Playroom at the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center

The City of Alexandria invites the public to attend two fundraising events designed to raise funds for a planned soft playroom for children ages 0 to 5 years old.

The first event, a family “Arts and Crafts Day,” is scheduled for Sunday, March 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, 3210 King St.  Children will have the opportunity to paint tiles that will decorate the proposed Soft Playroom. The fee is $20 per tile. To ensure tiles are available for your child, please pay for them in advance at http://softplayroom.express.ts.com or mail a check made payable to Alexandria Soft Playroom to Soft Playroom Treasurer, 608 South View Terrace, Alexandria, VA 22314. In addition to the tile painting, several other arts and crafts activities are planned. Members of the Soft Playroom Volunteer Parents’ Group will be available to discuss the proposed design of the playroom.

The second event is a performance of The Great Zucchini, recently rated as Washington's top children's entertainer.  It will be held on Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m. at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Tickets will be available for purchase beginning March 24, and all proceeds from the performance will benefit the Soft Playroom.

The Soft Playroom will be located in the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center Club Room 4. The proposed design for the 800-square-foot room is in progress and will feature soft play structures that can be arranged in a variety of configurations for activities suitable for children of different ages. The City’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities will offer classes and other programs designed around the soft playroom.  When completed, there will be a nominal admission fee charged to use soft playroom and related activities.

The Soft Playroom Volunteer Parents’ Group and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities are cosponsoring these fundraising events. For more information, e-mail Elizabeth Jones at softplayroom@gmail.com. To make a monetary contribution, visit www.supportthesoftplayroom.com.
