The City of Alexandria was one of seven cities to receive the 2008 Cultural Diversity Award from the National League of Cities’ National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO). The award recognizes cities for their efforts to enhance and celebrate cultural diversity in the community. The award was presented to the City at the annual “Celebrate Diversity” breakfast at the National League of Cities’ Congressional City Conference in Washington, DC on Monday, March 10.
NBC-LEO recognized Alexandria’s Multicultural Services Initiative, and its partnership with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to recognize naturalized citizens at their Annual Citizenship Day ceremony at Market Square in front of City Hall. In September 2007, Mayor William D. Euille and members of City Council honored 25 individuals after they were sworn in and took the oath of allegiance for U.S. citizenship.
The City Cultural Diversity Award was established by NBC-LEO in 1995 to promote cultural diversity in community governance through citizen and community participation. Winning cities are selected from a pool of applicants that are grouped according to population. Daisy W. Lynum, Mayor Pro Tem in Orlando, Florida, chaired this year’s awards competition.
“Alexandria prides itself in being a caring community,” stated Mayor William D. Euille. “We are honored to receive this award as it recognizes our commitment to valuing our City’s diversity and treating everyone with dignity and respect.”
