Alexandria Detention Center Earns Accreditation, Triple Crown Honors

The American Correctional Association (ACA) has certified the Alexandria Detention Center for its high quality of jail management. The ACA certification focuses on all phases of jail operation, including administration and management, physical plant, institutional operations and services, and inmate programs. Alexandria received 100 percent approval on each of the mandatory standards, according to the ACA auditing team.

The ACA presented the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office with an official Certificate of Accreditation during its Winter Conference in January. Captain Tony Di Cesare, Commander of Judicial Services, who was Acting Chief Deputy for Jail Operations during the accreditation process, and Technical Services Commander Mondré Kornegay, who managed the accreditation process, accepted the award.

With the ACA accreditation, the Alexandria Detention Center has attained the “Triple Crown Award” from the National Sheriffs’ Association for achieving simultaneous accreditation from the ACA, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. This is the fourth time that the Detention Center has won the Triple Crown; previously, the award was bestowed in 1995, 2000, and 2003. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Department of Corrections have also certified the Detention Center.

“We are appreciative of this award, and the recognition it gives us,” said Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne. “We have strived to provide the best detention facilities in every manner. Our staff members, both sworn and civilian, are proven professionals. We live by the spirit of the standards established by the accrediting agencies.”
