The Alexandria Community Services Board is sponsoring training on the recovery process for persons with mental illness or substance dependency. The training will introduce the principles of mental health recovery, peer support and community integration as the catalyst for transforming individual lives and mental health systems. Matthew Federici, M.S. CPRP; Jim McCormick, Ph.D.; and Crystal Edwards, B.A., of the Institute for Recovery and Community Integration, will be conducting the training.
This two-day event is Tuesday and Wednesday, March 4-5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lee Center Auditorium, 1108 Jefferson Street. Lunch will be provided each day, and 6 CEUs per day will be given to health care providers. There is no charge to attend. The event is open to the community and will be particularly helpful for consumers of mental health services, their family members, providers and advocates.
The concept of a “recovery” model seeks to establish personal empowerment, attitudinal change, skill building, self-determination, self-help, peer support and community integration as the foundations of mental health treatment. The effectiveness and value of peer support and peer-operated activities are emphasized due to limitations on resources for funding systems of care.
This event is paid for by the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services through grant monies administered by Pathway Homes.
