Unlock the vast history in slave narratives with historian and genealogist Char Bah at 11 a.m. at the Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe St. In her presentation, “Documenting African-American Oral History—20th Century to Pre-Civil War,” Bah will use a slave narrative from government records and show how she was able to research that person’s lineage from the 20th century to the mid-19th century. Sunday, February 24 -- NAACP Annual Black History Month Program
Join the Alexandria Black History Museum and the Alexandria Branch of the NAACP for the annual Black History Month lecture and soul food tasting from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church, 322 N. Alfred St. Mayor William D. Euille will be the featured guest speaker. Following the lecture, guests will sample a variety of African-American traditional foods. Admission is free. Monday, February 25 -- Tavern Toddlers
Because it’s never too early for kids to appreciate history, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum developed this special program for toddlers (walkers through 36 months) and their caregivers. Tavern Toddlers features a weekly open playtime on the first Monday of the month at the museum, 134 N. Royal St. February’s theme is Life Then and Now , which celebrates George Washington’s birthday by exploring what daily life was like 200 years ago. Thursday, February 28 --Workshop: The Art and Science of Talking about Sex with Youth
There are few topics to discuss with young people that are more important than sex. But it isn't always the easiest conversation to start, maintain, and continue. This workshop will provide practical strategies and tips for having important conversations with young people about sex. This training is open to anyone working with youth. “Imaging Blackness, 1915-2002: Film Posters from the Indiana University Black Film Center/Archive” is now open at the Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe St. This new exhibition features dozens of movie posters from a variety of black films, including westerns, musicals and dramas. Vintage posters represent the marketing of black entertainers who contradicted or strengthened stereotypes as they created a successful place for African Americans in film.
