City of Alexandria Hosts Community Meeting on Key Drive Drainage Improvements

The City of Alexandria invites residents to participate in a community meeting to learn about proposed drainage improvements along Key Drive.  The meeting will be held on Thursday, February 7 at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) at 7 p.m. 

These drainage improvements are needed to reduce flooding issues and provide a long-term solution to minimize the repair and replacement of driveway culverts along Key Drive.  They are also needed to reduce flooding along the unnamed tributary to Taylor Run, particularly at the driveway culverts along Key Drive and Francis Hammond Parkway. 

The proposed drainage improvements include the construction of approximately 2,500 linear feet of storm drain and related structures including manholes, diversion structures, and an upgraded outfall.  The storm pipe will re-direct flood flows from the existing stream channel, which currently overtops during substantial storm events, through the underground pipe system.  Two (2) diversion structures that are strategically located along the proposed storm drain will continue to provide base-flow to the existing stream, although the quantity of base-flow will likely fluctuate seasonally.

Meeting participants will have an opportunity to (1) learn more about existing flooding and drainage issues; (2) provide comments and ask questions about the proposed drainage improvements; (3) learn about the proposed construction schedule; and (4) hear about how the construction will affect property and local traffic patterns.
