Alexandria City Council to Hold Public Hearing on December 15
Council to Consider Adoption of Economic Sustainability Work Group Recommendations

The Alexandria City Council will consider adoption of the final recommendations from the Economic Sustainability Work Group, at its regular public hearing on Saturday, December 15, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Economic Sustainability Work Group presented its draft recommendations at a Town Hall meeting held in late September, received public input and made its final recommendations to Council in October. On December 15, the public will have a final opportunity to comment on the recommendations at the public hearing.

The City Council created the Economic Sustainability Work Group last year to undertake a review of the City’s economic condition and to develop recommendations that would help sustain the City’s economy and grow commercial tax revenues over the long term. Nigel Morris, a long-time City resident and co-founder of Capital One, chaired the group of eleven dynamic and visionary business and civic leaders in Alexandria.

Over the past year, the Work Group held meetings and developed more than 100 economic-related recommendations. Key highlights from the recommendations include: expanding commercial development around Metro stations, enhancing waterfront development to accommodate visitors from the National Harbor, improving the marketability of Landmark Mall, and minimizing effects of the government regulatory environment on the business climate.

At the City Council meeting on November 19, Council members appointed an implementation committee charged with overseeing the implementation of the Work Group’s recommendations once Council takes action on December 15. After City Council takes action on the final report of the Economic Sustainability Work Group, the committee will begin reviewing and advising on implementation plans.
