City of Alexandria Reminds Residents to "Be Ready" for Inclement Weather

As the temperatures continue to drop and snow is in the forecast, the City of Alexandria reminds residents to make preparations for winter weather. Snow and ice storms produce an average annual accumulation of 15 inches in Alexandria, spread over several snow events in a typical winter. As part of its emergency campaign, “Be Ready Alexandria!” the City encourages residents to take simple, low-cost steps to get ready for inclement weather.

Residents are advised to follow the same plan for winter weather as they would for any other emergency—getting emergency supplies, making a communication plan, and staying informed about local weather conditions. Winter weather can cause downed power lines, so emergency supplies should include essential items to last at least three days in the event of a power outage, such as a battery-power radio and extra batteries, food and water, flashlights, a first aid kit, blankets and medications.

Making a communication plan involves discussing the impact of severe winter weather in your area and what your family would do during an actual emergency. Decide on a meeting place if your family cannot return home due to closed roads, designate an out-of-town friend or relative as a point-of-contact and plan for the specific needs of your household. Always tell someone before you travel on snowy or icy roads where you are going and when you expect to arrive.

The City of Alexandria is committed to providing residents with continuous service and up-to-date information during winter weather emergencies. Residents and those who work in the City are urged to prepare for the possibility of heavy winter storms, to know the law and be alert for snow emergency declarations. The City of Alexandria has launched an updated web site that includes comprehensive information for residents on the City’s plan for handling inclement weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to visit alexandriava.gov/snow for more information.

To receive up-to-date information scheduling changes or cancellations of City programs during snow emergencies, residents can check the City’s web site at alexandriava.gov, receive e-mailed information by signing up for the City’s Emergency Information on eNews (www.enews.alexandria.gov), or check local radio and television stations. For general information during regular City business hours, residents can call the Office of Citizen Assistance at 703.838.4800. For snow removal information, or to report potholes, call 703.838.4488.
