Proposed Tauber Gift Will Benefit City Residents

Yesterday, the Alexandria City Council authorized the City Manager to proceed to plan to acquire land at 4600 King Street, and an adjacent parcel at 3451 North Beauregard Street. These parcels are located on the site of the former Jefferson Memorial Hospital. City Council expects to complete final authorization in December.

Earlier this year, Dr. Alfred Tauber of the Tauber Foundation, the current owner of the property, offered to donate the land to the City if it could be designated for a beneficial public use. The 4.7-acre property could range in value from $15 to more than $29 million, depending on development plans and market conditions. The City negotiated certain reimbursement costs incurred by the Foundation in their final assemblage of all property interests, which will result in a $5 million reimbursement by the City to the Foundation.

The City is grateful that Dr. Alfred Tauber, through the Tauber Foundation, offered the property to the City for public use. The property will be named “Laszlo N. Tauber Campus,” in honor of Dr. Laszlo Tauber, a surgeon and the founder of Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

“The City of Alexandria is grateful that Dr. Alfred Tauber and the Tauber Foundation offered a major gift to the City that will benefit residents. We look forward to continued collaboration as this process moves forward,” said Mayor William D. Euille.
