Alexandria’s Urban Forestry Steering Committee to Hold
Family Fall Festival Tree Sale on October 13
Great Trees - Great Prices - Great for Alexandria

Headlined as “Great Trees, Great Prices, and Great for Alexandria,” Alexandria’s Urban Forestry Steering Committee (UFSC) and Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will hold a City tree sale on Saturday, October 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Armistead L. Boothe Park, located at 520 Cameron Station Boulevard.

The goal of the sale is to promote the preservation of the Alexandria’s tree canopy by encouraging the planting of trees on private property throughout the City. Tree stewards will be available at the sale to provide consultation on tree choice and care.

Denison Landscaping and Nursery of Fort Washington, Maryland, will provide a variety of trees that are suitable for planting in Alexandria. The shade, flowering and evergreen trees selected for the sale include Willow Oak, Red Maple, Black Gum, London Planetree, Heritage River Birch, Redbud, Purple Leaf Smoke Tree, Amur Maple and Leyland Cypress.

The trees, approximately 1-inch caliper and five to eight feet tall, come in easy-to-handle and easy-to-plant containers. Shade trees in five gallon containers are $30 each. Shade and ornamental trees in 10-gallon containers are $45 each. Leyland Cypress trees in 15-gallon containers can be preordered only for $80 each.

Residents can reserve trees in advance by Thursday, October 11. No deposit is necessary. To reserve a tree, call Jerry Dieruf, Arborist, of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities at 703.838.5040, extension 451, or e-mail jerry.dieruf@alexandriava.gov. A name, telephone number, and the type and quantities of the tree should be provided. Reserved trees that are not picked up by 10 a.m. on October 13 will be released for sale.

The Urban Forestry Steering Committee was established by the City Manager at the request of City Council in 2004 and seeks to promote the preservation of the Alexandria’s tree canopy by encouraging the planting of trees on private property throughout the City.
