Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria Archaeology Museum, and Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum Host 12th Annual Arts Safari

On Saturday, October 13, the Torpedo Factory Art Center, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will host the 12th annual Alexandria Arts Safari, a day of hands-on craft activities and art demonstrations for children and their families.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, located at 105 N. Union St., children can enjoy activities such as the Clay Experience, Arts Safari Painting, Paper Bag Animal Masks, Fabric Collage, Fold and Dye, and more; artists from the Springwater Fiber Workshop will also be on hand to present fiber art activities and demonstrations. Admission is free.

The Alexandria Archaeology Museum, located on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory, will present Pottery Patterns on Paper, a popular activity inspired by designs on salt-glazed stoneware pottery shards excavated from local archaeological sites.

This year, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, 105-107 S. Fairfax St., joins the family fun with a free Open House from 1 to 5 p.m. Through tours, crafts and art projects, visitors will learn about this amazing family business, the creation of medicine, and the many uses for dragon’s blood! Located a few blocks from the Torpedo Factory, the Apothecary was where all of Alexandria came to shop and get well from 1792 until 1933. For more information on the Open House, please call Liz Williams at 703.838.4242 or e-mail Liz.Williams@alexandriava.gov.

Children participating in the Arts Safari should arrive with big imaginations and wear clothing that can get a little dirty. Most activities are appropriate for children ages 6 and older, with parent supervision.

The Alexandria Arts Safari is presented by the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association, with participation from the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, and The Art League. Art supplies are sponsored by Plaza Artist Materials.

The Torpedo Factory Arts Center, which is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., houses more than 160 visual artists who produce artwork in a variety of media, including painting, ceramics, photography, jewelry, stained glass, fiber, printmaking, and sculpture. The artists invite visitors to join them in their studios and observe their creative processes. Visitors can ask questions, learn about each of their art forms, and purchase original work.
