City of Alexandria Schedules Fall 2007 Writer’s Walking Workshops
Walk, Write, Create, Share

The City's Department of Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Activities invites residents to participate in a series of City walking tours, called Writer's Walking Workshops. Under the direction of a guest leader, workshop participants will stroll through distinctive City neighborhoods, parks, and attractions. At selected points, participants will pause for creative writing sessions that draw upon each tour’s inspirational setting. Following each workshop, participants will gather for voluntary sharing of their written works at a local coffee shop. This new program is an exceptional opportunity, for new and experienced writers alike, to blend a combination of walking and writing.

The following Writer’s Walking Workshops are scheduled for residents:

October 6: A Walk of Art, 9:30 a.m.: Walking route begins at the Mount Vernon Community School, 2601 Commonwealth Ave., and continues to the City’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Del Ray Artisans Gallery, before joining the Art on the Avenue festivities along Mount Vernon Avenue. Guest Facilitator: Gwen Mayes, Writing Journal Coach.
October 13: A Walk with Nature, 9:30 a.m.: Walking route begins at the Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center, 5750 Sanger Ave., and continues throughout the Dora Kelley Nature Park, guided by a park naturalist. Guest Facilitator: Mark Kelly, City’s Naturalist.
October 20: A Walk for Life, 7:30 a.m.: Walking route is part of the 14th Annual Alexandria Walk to Fight Breast Cancer, and begins at the AMC Hoffman Center 22 Theatres, 206 Swamp Fox Road (corner of Eisenhower Avenue and Swamp Fox Road). Join Alexandrians and take the opportunity to record your thoughts on this walk for life along Eisenhower Ave. To register for the Breast Cancer Walk, visit www.alexcancerwalk.com, or call 703.838.5030. Guest Facilitator: Mary McElveen, City of Alexandria’s Poet Laureate.
October 27: A Walk through History, 10 a.m.: Walking route begins at the corner of South Alfred and Duke Streets. The walk is based upon rediscovering Alexandria’s Free Historic African Americans and includes the newly rededicated Freedmen’s Cemetery, site of an ongoing archeological investigation. Guest Facilitator: Dr. Pamela Cressey, City Archaeologist.
