ALEXANDRIA POLICE PROMOTE BICYCLE SAFETY

In an effort to promote bicycle safety, the Alexandria Police Department, together with Transportation and Environmental Services and the National Park Service, will be conducting a Bicycle Education and Enforcement Campaign beginning September 29. This awareness campaign seeks to encourage all riders to practice bicycle safety and to be mindful of both City and State laws that govern bicycle operations in Alexandria.

All agencies will hold an educational event on September 29 and October 7 from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M at the dead end of South Royal Street where it leads to the Mt. Vernon bike trail. Bicycle trained officers will be on hand to answer questions about bicycle safety and offer maintenance and bicycle upkeep information to ensure the proper care of a bicycle. Maps, safety brochures, bottled water and other give-away items will also be handed out.

In response to an increase in the number of bicycle law violations in Alexandria, the Police Department will be increasing the enforcement of bicycle violations on October 13 and October 21 from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Officers will be posted along local bike paths. The officers will be strictly enforcing all City and State Code bicycle laws.
