Eight Alexandria Restaurants Highlighted in The New York Times

The New York Times recently featured eight restaurants located in the City of Alexandria as some of the best new locations for dining out in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. “A Town Takes Its Place at the Culinary Table,” which appeared in the Times’ Sunday (September 2) Travel section, describes the City’s “up-and-coming restaurant scene,” highlighting restaurants for their high-profile chefs, unique menu options, and idyllic locations in Old Town Alexandria.

The article describes Alexandria’s Old Town area as “a gas-lamp restaurant row” that offers the luxury of a smaller, more intimate dining experience for its guests, while remaining in close proximity to Washington. It highlights chefs Cathal Armstrong, Anthony Chittum, Mourou Ouattara, and Frank Morales, who all left successful positions in Washington, D.C. to work in Alexandria. The chefs cited the opportunity for creativity in developing and marketing their menus as a chief reason for relocating to the City.

Restaurants cited in the article include Restaurant Eve, Eamonn’s A Dublin Chipper, Majestic Caf, Vermilion, Farrah Olivia, and Rustico. The menu options offered by these restaurants range from French, Irish, and Italian fare to a variety of unique styles of American cuisine. In addition, two restaurants opening this fall—Hank’s Oyster Bar and Jackson 20 in the new Hotel Monaco (currently under construction and slated to open in early 2008)—are also mentioned.

“We are pleased that our local restaurants have been featured in The New York Times,” said Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille. “We hope this positive media coverage will encourage more visitors to sample the great dining options that Alexandria has to offer.”
