City of Alexandria Initiates Single-Stream Recycling Program

The City of Alexandria’s Office of Recycling will initiate a single-stream recycling program this month to make it easier than ever for residents to participate in the City’s recycling program. Single-stream recycling allows residents to put all recyclable materials into their yellow recycling bin, rather than separating paper from other recyclable materials placed at the curb for collection.

Previously, residents were required to separate recyclables because facilities that handle recyclables were not able to sort them for additional processing and reuse. However, new technologies have emerged that allow all recyclables to be collected together and sorted efficiently at recycling processor facilities, so residents will no longer be required to sort materials at the curb.

The recycling campaign, “Sort No More: Single Stream is at Your Door,” will be used to promote the new program to all residents that receive the City’s refuse and recycling services. Residents should receive a flyer in the mail by the end of this month that explains the new program and details the materials that can be placed in their yellow recycling bins. Comcast will also broadcast local commercials featuring the program’s mascot, Robbie the Recycling Squirrel, to announce the program to all City residents.
