Alexandria’s Personal Property Tax Due Friday, October 5
Convenient Online Payment Options Available

The City of Alexandria has mailed personal property tax bills and windshield decals (attached to the back of the bill) to City residents. Residential parking permits were also included in the personal property tax bill mailings for vehicle owners who live within City residential permit parking zones. If you are a resident of Alexandria and own or lease a vehicle but have not received a tax bill, please call the City’s Personal Property Branch at 703.838.4560 to obtain a copy of the tax bill. Personal property tax for both business owners and residents is due on Friday, October 5.

Alexandria residents continue to pay one of the lowest personal property tax rates in the region. For the 2007 tax year, taxpayers will be responsible for paying only 31% of the tax assessment for qualified vehicles valued between $1,001 and $20,000. Residents with vehicles valued at more than $20,000 will pay 31% on the first $20,000 of value; any remaining value is taxed at the full tax rate, in accordance with the provisions of the Virginia Personal Property Tax Relief Act. The vehicle license fee is not included as part of the tax assessment, and therefore, is not eligible for tax relief.

As provided by legislation passed earlier this year by the Virginia General Assembly, the City’s annual vehicle license fee increased approximately $8 per vehicle, with the additional revenue planned to be used exclusively for funding Alexandria mass transit capital projects. City Council adopted the fees in order to help address transportation needs in the City.

The Finance Department urges Alexandria taxpayers to pay their personal property taxes by mail or online to avoid waiting in line. The City offers numerous convenient methods for paying the personal property tax:
