City of Alexandria Commission for the Arts Seeks Nominations for 2007 Alex Awards The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking nominations for the 2007 Alex Awards. The program recognizes individuals, organizations, schools, and businesses that have made exceptional contributions to cultural life in the City of Alexandria. All nominations must be submitted to the Commission’s office, 1108 Jefferson St., by the close of business on Wednesday, September 19. The annual program, sponsored by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, promotes interest and involvement in the arts by recognizing excellence in four categories: (1) Artistic – Excellence in an Artistic Discipline; (2) Community – Excellence in Service to the Arts; (3) Education – Outstanding Contributions to Arts Education; and (4) Business – Innovative Partnerships between Businesses and the Arts. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts invites colleagues in these sectors to nominate individuals they believe helped to inspire and sustain a creative environment for the Alexandria community throughout this year. Barbara Boehm, 2007 Alex Awards chairman, announced this year's theme as "Celebrating the Sustainability of Art," reflecting both art that is inspired by recycled materials and the rich and sustainable presence of art in Alexandria. Winners in each of the four categories will receive an original work of art commissioned from a local Alexandria artist. The 2007 Alex Awards will be presented at a citywide event scheduled for Friday, November 2, beginning at 7 pm at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St. To receive a nomination form, request further information, inquire about sponsorship opportunities, or purchase tickets, call the Commission’s office at 703.838.6348, by email at alexandriacommissionforthearts@verizon.net, or visit www.alexandriacommissionforthearts.org. The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the City's Human Rights Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act. To request a reasonable accommodation or to request materials in an alternative format, call Cheryl Anne Colton, Cultural Arts Administrator, of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities at 703.838.6348 (TTY 703.838.4902) or email cherylanne.colton@alexandriava.gov. # # # |
