Alexandria Library’s SummerQuest Expands to Preschool Kids

SummerQuest, Alexandria’s Summer Reading program for kids, has become so popular in the last few years that all four branches of the Alexandria Library now offer programming for children 5 years old and younger. This expansion of “SummerQuest, Jr.” was made possible through generous support of the four Friends of the Library groups and a gift from the new PNC Bank at Foxchase Shopping Center.

Children ages 6-12 are invited to participate in SummerQuest events such as Magician Joe Romano’s “Escape into Reading” (Wednesday, June 20, 4 pm, Beatley Library, 5005 Duke Street), Kaydee Puppets’ “Colonial Connection” (Wednesday, July 11, 3:30 pm, Duncan Branch, 2501 Commonwealth Avenue), and the Wildlife Center of Virginia’s “Wildlife of the New World” (Thursday, July 5, 7 pm, Burke Branch, 4701 Seminary Road).

SummerQuest, Jr., for children ages 5 and under, includes such event as “Songs and Music” with Barbara Effron (Wednesday, August 1, 10 am, Beatley Library), Bill Jenkins’ “Hands-on Trip Back in Time Instruments” (Tuesday, July 3, 10:30 am, Duncan Branch), and Midsummer Magic: surprises and a craft (Thursday, June 21, 11 am, Barrett Branch, 717 Queen Street.)

Sign-up begins Monday, June 11, and programming runs into early August. Participating children may receive a reading log in which to list the books enjoyed and place stickers. For all events for both age groups, please check the Events calendar on the Library’s home page, www.alexandria.lib.va.us, or visit the Summer Quest homepage through the scroller which links to each branch’s unique SummerQuest page.
