Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy Invites
Youth in Grades 6 through 9 to Attend Third Annual Teen Summit

The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP) is inviting Alexandria youth in grades 6 through 9 to attend its third annual Teen Summit. The event will take place on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Minnie Howard School, located at 3801 W. Braddock Road. The ACAP hosts the annual summit to increase awareness about issues related to teen pregnancy and to provide youths with information and skills to help them make healthy decisions. The theme for this year’s event is “Get Real: Let’s Make Healthy Decisions.” Admission is free.

Activities for participants of the Teen Summit will consist of entertainment, informative workshops, a scavenger hunt and resource fair, door prizes, and peer-to-peer discussion about issues, such as decision making and self-esteem, college preparation and career planning, and reducing risky behavior and developing healthy relationships.

Other event highlights will include a performance by the Virginia Beach group Lyrical4cast, which incorporates music, theater, and discussion to address the most pressing teen issues, and the formal launch of the new ACAP teen Web site
www.alexgetreal.com, which features podcasts, interactive quizzes and games, and streaming video of ACAP’s commercials and educational materials.

The Teen Summit’s partners are The 100 Fathers, Inc.; Alexandria Health Department; Department of Human Services, Office on Youth Services; Gang Prevention Task Force; Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities; Office of the Mayor; Office on Women; Alexandria City Public Schools; Community Services Board; Planned Parenthood; Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry; and the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS).

Breakfast and lunch will be served, and free transportation will be provided from various locations throughout the City.

The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy consists of a coalition of City agencies, community organizations, and interested citizens who are dedicated to reducing teen pregnancy in Alexandria. ACAP seeks to involve parents, the community, and teens in meeting its mission.
