Alexandria Celebrates May as National Bike Month with Ninth Annual Bike To Work Day Event on May 18 In celebration of May as National Bike Month, the City of Alexandria will host the ninth annual Bike To Work Day event. The ceremony will take place from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday, May 18, at Market Square, located in front of City Hall at 301 King St. Hundreds of bicycle commuters are expected to participate and make a pit stop at Market Square during their morning commute to work. During the event, the City and its partners will offer participants information on bicycle and transit commuting and provide a bicycle tune-up station. Participants will also enjoy refreshments, giveaway items, and the chance to win prizes. Exhibitors at this year’s Bike To Work event include Big Wheel Bikes, BikeWalk Alexandria, the Bombay Curry Company, Bruegger’s Bagels, Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling, Flexcar, REI Recreational Equipment Inc., Spokes Etc., St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub, Wheel Nuts Bike Shop, Whole Foods, and Zipcar. In 1999, the City was the first jurisdiction in the region to organize an annual Bike To Work Day. Commuters who travel by bicycle employ a clean, quiet, and efficient mode of transportation while saving money on the fuel, maintenance, insurance, and parking costs of driving. Bicycle commuting benefits individuals and the community, incorporating active living into the daily routine, decreasing traffic congestion, and improving air quality. To register for the event, visit www.alexride.org. Persons who register before May 11 will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a new bike.
