City of Alexandria Offers New Series of Workshops That Allow
Participants To Tour City And Write About Inspirational Settings

First Writer’s Walking Workshop Session Begins on Saturday, April 21

The City of Alexandria will offer a new series of workshops that allow new and experienced writers to tour the City and write about each location’s inspirational setting. Under the direction of a guest leader, participants of the Writer’s Walking Workshop series will stroll through distinctive Alexandria neighborhoods, parks, and attractions and pause at selected areas to write. After each tour, participants will gather to voluntary share their writing at a local coffee shop.


The Writer’s Walking Workshop series will take place on Saturday at 9 a.m. from April 21 through May 12 at selected locations throughout the City. Workshop sessions will last up to four hours and be held on the following dates:


Saturday, April 21

9 a.m.

Waterfront & Old Town

Guest Facilitator: M. Magnus


Workshop participants will meet at Founders Park, located at the intersection of Oronoco and Union streets, at the volleyball court for a tour along the City’s waterfront through the Union Street tunnel and Market Square. An informal voluntary reading and sharing of notes and creations will be held at La Madeline, located at 500 King St.


Saturday, April 28

9 a.m.

Del Ray

Guest Facilitator: To Be Determined


Participants will gather at the Del Ray’s Farmers Market, located at the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Oxford avenues, and tour eastward through the neighborhood, stopping at parks and open space. Afterwards, an informal voluntary reading and sharing of notes and creations will take place at St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub, located at 2300 Mt. Vernon Ave.


Saturday, May 5

9 a.m.

Upper King Street & PTO Complex

Guest Facilitator: Mary McElveen


Participants will meet at the Durant Center, located at 1605 Cameron Street, for a tour to the King Street Metro, City parks, the Duke Street concourse, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) campus. An informal voluntary reading and sharing of notes and creations will be held at the Yockadot Poetics Theatre in the USPTO building.


Saturday, May 12

9 a.m.

Fort Ward Park

Guest Facilitator: Ruth Branningan


Participants will gather in front of the Fort Ward Museum, 4301 W. Braddock Road, for a tour through the historic Fort Ward Park, located in the City’s West End. Afterwards, an informal voluntary reading and sharing of notes and creations will take place at Alexandria’s Pastry Caf� in the nearby Bradlee Shopping Center.
