City of Alexandria Celebrates Arrival of Passenger Vans for After School Transportation Program with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on March 23 New Vans Allow West End Youth To Participate in Recreational Activities and Programs Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille and City Council members will join Congressman Jim Moran for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the arrival of two new Dodge Sprinter passenger vans for the After School Transportation Program. The ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23, in front of the Lee Center, located at 1108 Jefferson St. The vans will transport youth who reside in Alexandria’s West End to activities and programs sponsored by the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. “A number of neighborhoods in the City’s West End are located a great distance from recreation centers,” said Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille. “This distance limits the involvement of many youth from the West End in after-school activities. The new vans will help to ensure all City youth have access to recreational activities and programs.” Congressman Jim Moran facilitated the earmarking of $72,815 in Federal Transit Administration funding to support the establishment of the After School Transportation Program. Each of the two new vans holds up to 10 passengers. The vans are expected to fill a variety of transportation needs including support for youth, teen, adult, and senior programs. For additional information on the After School Transportation Program, call the Recreation Services Division at 703-838-4345. The Lee Center is served by DASH bus transit line AT #7.
