City of Alexandria Seeks Volunteers for 19th Annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup Volunteers Will Clean Local Streams, Potomac River, and Chesapeake Bay The City of Alexandria is seeking volunteers to participate in the 19th Annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup and join others across the region to clean up local streams and the Potomac River. The cleanup will take place on Saturday, March 31, from 9 am to noon at various sites in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The event will be held rain or shine. For a list of the cleanup sites in the City of Alexandria, visit www.potomaccleanup.org/trash_initiative/rc_sitesalexandriava.html. Trash and litter have many negative impacts on the quality of life. Trash is harmful to wildlife and the environment, and it is an eyesore that impairs the beauty of neighborhoods and decreases property values. The cleaning up and removal of litter costs local governments needed funds. Within three hours, individuals who volunteer for the cleanup will help make a difference in their community. Last year, volunteers removed over 200 tons of trash from regional streams. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Volunteers should wear shoes and clothes that they do not mind getting wet or dirty. For more information on the 19th Annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup or to volunteer, call Diana Handy of the City’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services at 703-519-3400, extension 166, or e-mail diana.handy@alexandriava.gov. For additional information on the regional cleanup, visit the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Web site at www.potomaccleanup.org. # # # |
