Alexandria Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Accident

Alexandria police are investigating an accident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian. At 6:52 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, a 29-year-old Alexandria man was crossing the 5700 block of Edsall Road when a vehicle struck him.

The victim was walking south across Edsall Road outside of a crosswalk in an eastbound lane when he was hit by a 1997 Ford Econoline van. The victim has been identified as German T. Gonzalez. Gonzalez was flown by helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He succumbed to his injuries today at 2:09 p.m.

The driver, Leon S. Jones, 27, of Washington, D.C., remained on the scene. He has been charged with No Operators License.

Members of the Crash Reconstruction Team are investigating this case. Initial investigation indicates that neither speed nor alcohol is a factor. No charges relating to the cause of the accident have been filed pending the outcome of the investigation.

This is the first traffic fatality in the City this year. There was one traffic fatality, also a pedestrian, during 2006.
