Alexandria Police Investigate Neglect Case;
Elderly Man Suffering from Hypothermia After Being Left on Bus Overnight

Around 9 a.m. today, Alexandria police and medics responded to the 300 block of South Alfred Street for the report of a person left on a church bus overnight. The victim, a 96-year-old Alexandria man, was found in a wheelchair on a bus in the parking lot of Alfred Street Baptist Church. He was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital where he is being treated for hypothermia and is in critical condition.

Initial investigation indicates that the man was transported by bus from Woodbine nursing home where he lives to Alfred Street Baptist Church for church services. When staff at Woodbine discovered him missing this morning, they contacted church staff. A church worker checked the bus and discovered the victim still on the bus in a wheelchair. Church staff then called 911.

Detectives are investigating this incident and are interviewing staff from the church and nursing home. It appears that the victim had been on the bus since about 2:30 p.m. yesterday. Overnight temperatures dropped below freezing and the victim suffered severe exposure.
