CITY OF ALEXANDRIA AND ALEXANDRIA RED CROSS OPEN WARMING CENTER FOR WEST END RESIDENTS FOLLOWING POWER OUTAGE Damage to Dominion Virginia power lines during routine maintenance earlier today has left residents of several apartment buildings without power in the vicinity of Edsall Road and Yoakum Parkway in Alexandria’s West End. The Alexandria Office of Emergency Management estimates that approximately 700 residents are currently affected. The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Chapter of the American Red Cross have opened a Temporary Warming Center for affected residents at the William Ramsey Recreation Center, located at 5650 Sanger Avenue (at N. Beauregard St.) The Warming Center will provide residents with food and basic necessities to withstand the evening’s cold weather. Current forecasts call for clear weather tonight, with light winds and low temperatures in the high 20’s. The affected residential buildings remain open to residents under emergency lighting. Residents are not required to evacuate. Use of the Temporary Warming Center is voluntary. At this time, crews are working to restore power to the affected buildings and service is expected to resume around midnight tonight. The Warming Center will remain open until power is restored to the affected buildings For additional information, contact Sherry Delaney, Alexandria Red Cross at 703-508-6264. # # # |
