CITY OF ALEXANDRIA SCHEDULES MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMEMORATIONS The City of Alexandria will celebrate and honor the legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the following programs and activities: � The City’s Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Mt. Vernon, Nannie J. Lee, Patrick Henry, and William Ramsay recreation centers along with the MacArthur and John Adams after- school programs will hold a week of after-school activities and events for City youth beginning Monday, Jan. 8, through Friday, Jan. 12. For detailed information, call the City’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities at 703-838-4842. � The City of Alexandria Employees’ Program Honoring the Birthday of the Late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 12, at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St. The event’s featured speaker is the Rev. Elbert Ransom, Jr., a private consultant and former Assistant to the City Manager. The Alexandria City Employees’ Choir will perform. � The 34th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Service will be held on Monday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Alexandria First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, located at 2723 King St. The event’s keynote speaker is Father Francis Hull of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. The Men’s Choir of the Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, DC will perform. The City of Alexandria is sponsoring the memorial service in cooperation with local religious, civic, and social organizations. � The M.L.K. Jr. Poster Contest Exhibition and Awards Program will feature the art of Alexandria elementary school students in grades 1 through 5. The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, Jan. 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Dr. Oswald Durant Center, 1605 Cameron St. The students’ works of art will illustrate the ideals of Dr. King’s nonviolent movement. The exhibit will remain on display at the Durant Center through the end of February. The Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage, Inc. and the Alexandria Black History Museum are presenting the exhibition and awards program.
