CITY OF ALEXANDRIA HELPS RESIDENTS WRAP UP HOLIDAYS
WITH JANUARY CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING COLLECTIONS
Trees Converted Into Mulch For Spring Gardening Use

The City of Alexandria will again help residents wrap up the holiday season by collecting residents’ Christmas trees for recycling on the first two Fridays in January. Trees will be converted into mulch and made available at no charge to City residents in the spring.

Tree recycling collections will be made at all residences that normally receive refuse collection and recycling services from the City of Alexandria. City crews will make two tree recycling collections, on Friday, Jan. 5 and again on Friday, January 12. All discarded trees should be placed curbside by 7 am on those dates. Trees placed in alleys will not be collected. Depending on the volume of trees to be recycled, it may be necessary to extend collections to the Saturdays following Jan. 5 and 12.

Trees placed at the curb after Jan. 12 will be collected as regular refuse and transported to the Covanta Alexandria/Arlington Waste-to-Energy Facility, where they will be burned with other refuse to produce electricity.

Residents can prepare their trees for recycling by removing all ornaments, tinsel, and stands, and not placing them in plastic bags.

For more information on the Christmas tree recycling or spring mulch programs, call the City’s Solid Waste Division at 703-519-3486 or visit www.alexandriava.gov/tes/sw.
